Here is a fact: You don’t have to move to Asia to become a digital nomad. Yep, it's true. Lisbon could be the perfect European city for you as a remote work beginner.

When people talk about digital nomads and their marvellous, enviable lifestyle, usually it’s Southeast Asia or South America that comes on mind. But not everyone is ready to leave everything behind with a one way ticket to a completely different culture, heck, a completely different world.

The great thing is, it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s completely okay to start small. Instead of buying a one way ticket, book a short trip instead. One week, two weeks, whatever feels right for you.

And you don’t have to go too far. Europe can be as exciting and empowering as faraway continents. And by Europe I mean specifically one city that has proven its potential for becoming Europe’s prime nomadic destinations, Lisbon.

Dubbed as Europe’s San Francisco and next Berlin, with a growing tech scene but retaining its local spirit, the budget friendly Portugal capital has been drawing more and more tech professionals over the past few years. We at Surf Office also feel that Lisbon is highly promising and that’s we recently opened our new office here.

Providing reliable, fast internet and comfy accommodation right in the heart of the city, it has become the regular nomadic stop for all sorts of nomads who have been on the road for a few years, as well as those who are just trying out this lifestyle and typical corporate folks who are just seeking a temporary change in their setup.

So what makes Lisbon perfect for a new nomadic adventure? Let’s see.

Beautiful weather

Did you know that Lisbon is one of the sunniest cities in the whole of Europe? With the average of 3023 hours of sunshine per year Lisbon makes a great base for exploration and you can get your work done bathing in sunshine.

Laid-back lifestyle

Mediterranean climate and position at the south of Europe destine Lisbon for its relaxed spirit. It’s also heavily supported by outdoor terraces and great viewpoints scattered over the city that are made for a nice after work chill with a drink at hand.

Lots to explore

Lisbon area has something for everyone. Whether you’re after hikes in nature, fairytale-like castles or top notch beaches (which are also perfect for surfing) and shores, including the westernmost point of mainland Europe. And all of it is only a short train ride from the city.

European culture

You might not feel entirely ready to dive into a foreign culture with all its quirks and customs and that’s okay. Being a European country, staying in Portugal makes the transition into remote lifestyle easier if you’re originally from a Western country.

Strong food scene

Are you a foodie? You’ll love Lisbon's food (and wine) scene! Lisbon has a lot of food gems, the best flat white in town can be found in a hip coffeeshop called Copenhagen, only 15 mins from Surf Office.

Gelato Davvero is the place to go for awesome ice cream and for lunch or dinner be sure to try something yummy at Mercado da Ribeira. This renovated market assembles the creme de la creme from Lisbon to provide unique and tasty restaurant experience. Oh, and how could you come to Lisbon without trying pastel de nata, the famous custard filled pastry!

Great community

The community is one of the pillars of Surf Office and thankfully, Lisbon is getting increasingly attractive for tech people and startups. We’re very glad we can contribute to the growing tech savvy crowd in Lisbon and help professionals, travelers, beginning remote workers and experienced nomads all blend in. Even the Web Summit conference recently moved to Lisbon and they certainly know why they do it.

Far enough and still close

Located almost at the end of Europe, Lisbon feels like it’s far away from your home yet close enough if you need to go back. So you don’t have to worry about feeling overwhelmed by new things and focus on enjoying everything around.

Outdoor positive

With great weather comes also lifestyle that relies on it which means parks, gardens and outdoor locations for sports are easy to find. Morning run along the river Tejo is especially popular. No wonder, the 25th of April Bridge in the backdrop and empty streets make it attractive whether you’re a seasoned runner or just flirting with a healthier lifestyle.
