Have you ever heard about Spot X? Well, admitted, it sounds a little bit like someone got an old-school map out and just marked wherever they anticipated a treasure.

But really, Spot X is a surf camp near Coffs Harbour on Australia's beautiful East Coast, boasting beachfront accommodation, a huge beach with wonderful surf-able waves so all you need to worry about here is getting up and throwing yourself into the waves. It's like a two-minute walk down to the beach. If you go slow that is.

Granted, there is not too much around Spot X but this is what makes it so special and off the beaten path because you will actually need to know about it to get here!

The next bigger town is Coffs Harbour, an odd 37 km south of Spot X or Byron Bay is like a 2.5 hour drive up north. I knew about the camp because it was part of my bus trip with Loka from Sydney to Brisbane and we simply stopped off for one night but you can even get here with the Greyhound or OzExperience bus easily too.

I also extended (like I've seen many other people do so too!) and ended up spending 5 amazing days at the Mojosurf camp, during which you could hardly get me out of the water. I am surprised I haven't grown a mermaid tail while I was there!

Surfing time SpotX

So are you ready for the perfect place on the East Coast of Australia to hang out, get a tan, learn to surf and make new friends?

And did I tell you about the beautiful surroundings, all the other things to do apart from surfing and the kangaroos and dolphins you can spot from close up? Every single day! This is what you get when you choose to live the dream for a little while…

Surf All Day Every Day

It's called a surf camp for a reason! No matter if you are just starting out or have surfed before, Spot X offers swell and waves for different levels and is especially beginner-friendly.

If you are lucky, you'll ride the waves along dolphins in no time! Surfing really doesn't need any particular talent, you just need to have fun in the water and play with the waves and never ever give up when you get wiped out, it's all part of it.

For me waking up with the sunrise at 6 am, having my first coffee on the veranda feeling the first rays of the day touch my skin and then jumping in my wetsuit and grabbing a board to paddle out to catch the first waves of the new day is absolutely the best feeling! And on top of that, you get super friendly and fun Mojosurf instructors.

Normally, you have a lesson in the morning and you can opt to also have another lesson in the afternoon. Or simply hire a board and practice yourself. As for me, I have tried some surfing here and there around the world before but I only just caught the surfing bug when I came to Bali in March this year and wanted to give it a go again. I simply paddled out with my housemate and well, ever since take the board out when there are decent waves.

They say, the longer you surf the better you'll get… then comes the addiction. Yer well, surfing just makes me very happy and leaves me feeling very much alive!

Live the Laid Back Beach Life or Go Explore

Mojosurf Camp Spot X is not only a really perfect place to learn how to surf, but there are heaps of other backpackers chilling out which makes it a great spot to make new friends, hang by the campfire or explore the surroundings.

Every day looks however you like it really. This would be a typical day for me: wake up for sunrise, head for a hot porridge or quick toast, paddle out for a surf (I caught the most amazing waves in the morning so well worth the early get up!), chill for a bit, grab lunch, surf again, chill, watch a movie or go explore what's around, have dinner and maybe a few drinks with new friends and off to sleep you go! Do it all over again the next day.

If you've been doing two lessons a day for a few days I guarantee your arms will feel like jelly and you will be happy to have a little break. Maybe try some other water activities offered directly at the camp like ocean rafting, river kayaking or kangaroo golf.

Enjoy Ultimate Beachfront Accommodation

No matter your style, if you come in your own van and want to camp, share a tipi with other backpackers or opt for a private cabin for more comfort, Mojosurf Camp Spot X has it all. The best? You can see the ocean from almost everywhere!

You can either eat every meal at the surf camp as they cook it up or there are also cooking areas if you feel like making something yourself. I found the proportions pretty big and enough to satisfy my surfer hunger. There are also vegetarian and vegan options if you ask for them and heaps of salad for lunch which is a plus as I kinda like my greens!

And then there is a big room to watch TV and movies in comfy bean bags, a tour desk to book your next trip and a bonfire place to hang out in the evening.

It's All up to You

I'm already hooked on returning one day in the future and literally surfing all day every day again. And if you want to do exactly that too, you've got a few options actually.

It's as simple as choosing from the 2 to 5-day surf & stay packages or if you'd like to surf longer, you can join one of the surf adventures and split your time catching waves at Spot X and in beautiful Byron Bay.

At Spot X, I also met a few backpackers who liked it so much that they stayed for a month working for food and accommodation which is always an option too.

And then there is also the Mojosurf Academy, where you can perfect your surfing with lessons every day for a month or two and even qualify as a surf instructor in three months. How cool is that! If I wasn't a busy digital nomad working very hard from the best places in the world already I'd almost consider swapping my career!
